Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is extensively employed in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors, as well as in the formulation of many cosmetic and personal care products such as skin creams, shampoos, and other beauty‑related items. Ethanol is also the primary active component in alcohol‑based disinfectants.

Assessing alcohol quality and verifying its suitability for different applications has become a priority across industries. Various standards have been developed for different applications to outline detailed requirements.

One of the most recognized and widely applied references for ethanol quality evaluation is pharmaceutical pharmacopoeias such as USP and BP, which specify detailed requirements for pharmaceutical and medical use.

In USP Chapter <611> and the dedicated monograph for ethyl alcohol, measurement procedures are described for parameters such as purity percentage, levels of impurities (including acetaldehyde, acetal, benzene, etc.), and other quality tests.

At Arman Shimi Sanj Co., our alcohol analysis section performs comprehensive alcohol testing according to various pharmacopoeias. These tests include purity determination, impurity profiling, specific gravity, UV absorption, alcohol acidity, and Bitrex (denatonium benzoate) content measurement.
